Press Release: Lester Hunt portrait display June 19th, Wyoming Capitol Rotunda
Symbolically returning Lester C. Hunt’s spirit to the Wyoming Capitol, the official portrait of Governor Hunt will be displayed in the Rotunda from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Wednesday June 19th, the 70th anniversary of his death.
Hunt was a popular governor before becoming a U.S. Senator. He took his own life while serving in the last year of his Senate term. His body lay in state in the Rotunda on June 22, 1954, before his funeral services in Cheyenne.
Tragically, Wyoming continues to lead the nation in the number of suicides, the devasting effects of which impact generations and leave friends and family heartbroken. If you or anyone you know is considering suicide, seek help. Please know that we want you to live.
Statistics show that suicidal thoughts visit many of us at some point in our lives. Often, simply realizing that you are not alone and that there are people who want you to live can help redirect your thoughts and provide a new perspective. Please talk to someone. Call the suicide hotline at 988 and talk to someone here in Wyoming who wants to help.

Reflection
Twenty-two people have been chosen to serve as United States Senator from the State of Wyoming. Seven were former governors. Four died in office. One died before he took the office. Lester C. Hunt is the only one to die by suicide.
This event precedes a healing service open to everyone at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Cheyenne at 1:30 in the afternoon.
All are welcome to the portrait viewing and healing service.
